California Sparkling Melon Fresca
As seen on GOOD DAY SAC — Sweet California cantaloupe meets creamy milk and a splash of sparkling water for a refreshing drink that's equal parts nostalgic and elegant. Perfect for brunch, warm summer afternoons, or your next backyard gathering.
Ingredients:
1 ripe California cantaloupe (about 3 pounds), shredded
1½ cups whole milk (or oat milk for a dairy-free option)
1 cup chilled sparkling mineral water or club soda
1 tablespoon honey, plus more to taste
Juice of ½ lime (optional—just enough to brighten)
Pinch of flaky sea salt
For Serving:
Ice
Fresh mint sprigs
Thin cantaloupe slices or melon balls
Lime zest (optional)
METHOD:
1. Cut the cantaloupe in half and remove the seeds. Using a fork, gently shred the orange flesh into long ribbons, allowing the natural juices to collect in a large pitcher. Avoid scraping the pale green flesh, which can taste bitter.
2. Add the honey, lime juice (if using), and a pinch of flaky sea salt. Stir until the honey dissolves completely. Pour in the cold milk and gently mix.
3. Just before serving, slowly stir in the chilled sparkling mineral water to preserve the bubbles.
4. Fill tall glasses with ice and spoon plenty of the shredded melon into each glass. Pour the fresca over the ice and garnish with fresh mint, melon slices, and a touch of lime zest.
Enjoy immediately!
Laura's Chef's Trick:
Instead of mixing the sparkling water into the pitcher, pour it into each glass first, then slowly add the creamy melon mixture. The beautiful ribbons create a café-style presentation that's perfect for entertaining—or television. For an extra-special touch, freeze small melon balls ahead of time and use them instead of ice cubes. They'll keep your drink perfectly chilled without diluting the flavor.
