California Melon Garden Salad with Warm Citrus Honey, Basil & Mint
As seen on Good Day Sacramento – Fresh, colorful, and bursting with the flavors of summer!
Peak-season melons don’t need much—just a little love. A warm citrus-honey dressing gently coats the fruit, while fresh basil and mint bring a garden-fresh finish that’s perfect for entertaining or enjoying on a warm California afternoon.
The best melon salad starts with ripe, in-season fruit. Visit your local farmers market and mix varieties like Sugar Kiss, Hami, Canary, or Crenshaw with traditional watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew for a colorful celebration of the harvest.

Serves: 6-8
Ingredients
2 cups seedless watermelon, cubed or scooped into melon balls
2 cups cantaloupe, cubed or scooped into melon balls
2 cups honeydew, cubed or scooped into melon balls
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 tablespoon fresh orange juice
2 tablespoons California wildflower honey
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
Pinch of flaky sea salt
Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
2 tablespoons fresh basil, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons fresh mint, finely chopped
Small basil and mint leaves, for garnish
Instructions
Arrange the watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew in a large serving bowl.
In a small saucepan, combine the honey, lime juice, orange juice, olive oil, and sea salt. Warm gently over low heat for 1–2 minutes, just until the honey loosens and everything comes together. Do not let it simmer or boil.
Allow the dressing to cool slightly, then drizzle it over the melons and gently toss to coat.
Fold in the basil and mint just before serving, then finish with a few grinds of black pepper and garnish with fresh herb leaves.
Chill for 20–30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to come together.
Laura’s Chef’s Trick
Gently warming the honey and citrus helps the dressing coat every piece of melon beautifully while preserving the fresh flavors. Let the dressing cool for a few minutes before pouring it over the fruit, and always add the herbs at the very end so they stay bright, fragrant, and vibrant.
