Shopping with your eyeballs? You probably haven't imagined that what’s on my plate has been inspected with such scrutiny. I’ve known for some time the imbalance of farm food that doesn’t make it to the market. Produce can be determined unsaleable in the retail setting based on numerous factors that relate to cosmetic defects and NOT taste or quality.
Recently, I was made aware of start-ups, like IMPERFECT, that wants to deter the waste and bridge the farm to family with a substantial budget friendly motivation. Their goal is to bring to your home healthy, delicious produce while providing the knowledge so “…you can feel good about your purchase knowing that you are reducing food waste on California farms and protecting the environment." According to article by Smithsonian.com, six billion pounds of irregular produce are wasted in the US. Hmm, when I last checked my salad, my stir fry, nor with my side of grilled vegetables, did I find time to check the judges scorecard for its runway style points.
So I ask you to look at your kitchen, would you be upset to see a tomato with wide hips, or maybe a broccoli with a head just a bit larger than its peers? Is it really cheaper to just throw it away? To my fellow Foodies I say, Embrace the misfits!
