So you’ve heard a lot about Green Tea, right? Let me give you a little recap on the health benefits of green tea- Prevents heart disease and several types of cancer, improves concentration, boosts metabolism and it even serves as an anti-inflammatory! How much do you know about this miracle-working drink? Let’s start with its origin in Asia, China specifically. Still today a majority of tealeaves are grown in China. Did you know there is only 1 plantation in all of the United States that grows tea? The plant itself is not difficult to grow but harvesting the leaves is only the halfway point! All of our teas come from the Camellia sinenis plant. The difference between black and green teas is identified during their processing. Green tea is made by immediately steaming and drying the leaves while black tea is fermented. The minimal processing in green tea helps it not only retain its color but also the health benefits.
Green tea should steep for only 2-3 minutes to maximize the flavor. Leaving the tea for longer will cause a bitter taste. Remember that green tea does have about ¼ the amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee. To lower the caffeine content of green tea, pour a little water over the leaves and allow it to sit for 30 seconds. Strain the water off the leaves and then prepare the tea as usual. As a little side note, sugar will not destroy the health benefits of tea, so it is ok to add some for the flavor.
